Reddy Pandurang H. Causes of Ocular Hypertension High pressure inside the eye is usually due to problems with production of fluid in the eye — called aqueous humor — or drainage problems with ducts being blocked. What Causes Glaucoma? Mar 12, Featured Experts. Sumit Bhatia Senior Consultant —Gastroenterology. When you are diagnosed with ocular hypertension, your eyes will be checked often for signs of glaucoma.
When does ocular hypertension become glaucoma? Glaucoma refers to a group of diseases that cause damage to the optic nerve. Optic nerve damage is permanent and cannot be restored. The most common type of glaucoma, primary open-angle glaucoma, occurs when fluid cannot properly drain from the eye. This fluid begins to build-up and raise your IOP.
The more fluid that builds up and the more that your IOP elevates, the more likely you are to have optic nerve damage and vision loss. When you have ocular hypertension, you will typically be given treatments to lower your IOP. Ocular hypertension is not the same as glaucoma. With ocular hypertension, the optic nerve looks normal and there are no signs of vision loss. Ocular hypertension usually does not have any signs or symptoms.
Because you can have high eye pressure and not know it, it is important to have regular eye exams with your ophthalmologist to check for glaucoma.
