When you arrive at your reunion and realize that everyone is getting older, it can make the experience feel less isolating and help you come to terms with the fact that aging is an inevitable part of life.
If you suffered through high school and have since built a wonderful, rewarding life for yourself despite the bad experiences, showing off your success to the people that treated you badly can be quite vindicating. To Network — Networking is so important in some fields that there are entire social websites built solely around the premise of helping people to network on a professional level.
Attending your high school reunion can be a great experience, but it may also afford you some networking opportunities that you would otherwise miss out on. To Reminisce — Some people suffer through high school, but there are also those that reveled in the experience. Looking back at your high school career and sharing a few laughs with the people that were by your side for all of those great times can be very rewarding.
To mark the occasion, family members wrote notes on cards that went into a time capsule that attendees buried on the property at the reunion, with instructions that the capsule be unearthed 50 years from now. Some of those plans will undoubtedly change as the delta variant continues to affect communities.
And there are those who are still uncomfortable at large in-person events, so many reunions offer the option of joining virtually, such as the Bull reunion.
Lauren Donohue, sales manager at Mohonk Mountain House in New Paltz, said the resort usually hosts about reunions a year; however, this year Mohonk saw a significant increase in family reunions. Back then, it was just the four siblings with their spouses, and a total of 14 children. They held the same party the next year, and it became an annual event. Family members know not to pencil anything else on their calendars for the Fourth of July weekend each year: That Saturday is the de facto reunion, with most people sleeping over and staying for breakfast and an early lunch on Sunday.
Over the years, as the family grew and spread out into the Rockland County area and beyond, the party took on greater meaning. Now, their children are sharing hosting duties throughout Rockland, Westchester, and upstate. Although it may be on a smaller scale than the Bull reunion — only about 35 attendees this year — the group looks forward to it every year.
Reunions emotionally bond your donors, volunteers, and university—a bond that can be long-lasting. Increase donors with the latest innovations in philanthropy: Subscribe to The Advancement Blog. Similarly, reunions play well with up-and-coming millennials—young alumni who value their networks and friendships. Reunion giving blends perfectly with their preferred giving channels of digital and social media.
But reunions also provide an occasion to invest in data updates and review research profiles and class lists. For each reunion year or program, we re-acquaint ourselves with leading influencers in our alumni circles and identify new potential donors to solicit. And, post-reunion, many donors will renew their gifts and retain at a higher level than prior to the reunion—providing your annual fund with much-needed sustainable growth.
So go ahead—invite them to think back, come back, and give back to their alma mater. Remember me. Reset Password Cancel. It appears you are trying to log in, but you have not accepted our cookie policy.
